What is a Lohnsteuerhilfeverein?

A Lohnsteuerhilfeverein is an association that does the tax returns of its members. You join, pay a yearly fee, and we take care of your German income tax return. We are entered in the register of associations at the Amtsgericht Mainz (VR 42550) and supervised by the Landesamt für Steuern, as the law requires for every Lohnsteuerhilfeverein.

Is this for me?

Very likely. We help everyone who receives a salary, a pension or a civil service pension. The only people we may not advise are the self-employed.

  • Employees and people with a minijob
  • Civil servants, judges and soldiers
  • Pensioners and retired civil servants
  • Apprentices and students
  • Parents and families
  • Small landlords with rental income up to 18,000 € a year (36,000 € for married couples)
  • Solar panels on your own roof
  • Family abroad that you support with regular payments

Self-employed, freelancers and businesses: the law does not allow a Lohnsteuerhilfeverein to advise them.

Questions

Does the initial consultation cost anything?

No. During the initial consultation, we work out how much you could get back. Then you decide.

Do I have to come to the office?

No. You can visit us, call us or talk to us by video. We look forward to getting to know you at the first appointment.

How long until I get my money?

If all documents are there, we usually submit your return during the appointment. The tax office then needs 4 to 8 weeks on average, sometimes longer.

I haven't filed for years. Is it too late?

No, we see this often. For voluntary tax returns, you can file for the past four years.

I am self-employed. Can you help me?

Unfortunately not. A Lohnsteuerhilfeverein may not advise the self-employed, freelancers or businesses. For that you need a tax adviser (Steuerberater).
